I bought game cheap in the stores. I would have been very angry if I had paid the full $50 for it. You spend half your time fighting the AI in running your worlds. Also it is not very easy to figure ship construction. When you are trying to defend yourself from the enemies strong ships in very key. It is a long learning curve to figure all the controls in this game. All the racists had their own standards for habitable planets. As your tech tree is gained it becomes easier to set up your worlds. If they are not good the colony may die out.
This game is in ancient turn-based style. For you regular American teenagers, that means it's boring. For those who want an in depth game, yet something they can take up and leave whenever, I would highly suggest this for your pleasure. The score is quite excellent, though extremely repetitive once you've played it for awhile. Yes, I used to play computer games through half the day. Getting too busy for that, now. :( The greatest drawback to this game is the complete lack of intensity in the battles. Ships vs. Ships battles can only be commenced when the two opposing fleets are adjacent to each other on the 2D Space Map, the order is given, a dice-like randomness decides all kinds of junk based upon the ships in the battle and a Star Trek type blow-up sound is made and you see a little explosion, which looks almost as if drawn in Paint, which signifies that damage was done. Bleurgh...what a drawback. I wish they had something like the Total War series, yeah baby! That series ROCK! Anybody ever heard or played Emperor of the Fading Suns? A game so near to its intended grandeur that its flaws were all the more annoying. Every time I think of that game I get both a warm, fuzzy feeling, and also a nauseated one. But if I had one word to describe what made that game almost great, it would be intrigue. Diplomatic diplomacy; Religious diplomacy; Militaristic diplomacy...the closest game I've yet to find that comes even close to the dark intrigue of that early 90's game is this Galactic Civilizations. If you enjoy manipulation, even if it is just manipulating five AI Alien races, this is the game. I suggest reading Gamespot.com's review on this game, they describe the nuances of this game's complex strategy quite well. But I must go... Oh, and why can't you be the alien races in this game? Sigh...that was another thing that kept it getting past an 8 out of 10 for me.Read full review
